1961 Chrysler Turbo Flite Concept had an Air Brake!

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

Chrysler Corporation Turbo Flite concept car designed by Virgil Exner was a showcase for the company's third generation experimental turbine engine. The car's canopy rose automatically as the doors opened and the headlights were retractable. At the rear there were integral dual exhaust outlets, plus the horizontal spoiler that joins the left and right fender fins together. It also rotated as an air brake. This is another collaborate effort between Ghia of Italy and Chrysler’s engineers. The TurboFlight concept was Virgil Exner’s last show car for Chrysler.

That's too cool and interesting that they even had "air brakes" as an idea back then.

Do you reckon it was needed?

It is very cool. With all the other stylistic and counter-productive aerodynamic work on the car, I'd say any benefit wouldn't be seen. I would imagine an air brake would have some effect at highway speeds though but totally unnecessary and with no real world benefits.

It still gets a thumbs up for the coolness factor alone.
